Plant embryogenesis is initiated by egg cell activation and requires the subsequent establishment of cell identities, embryonic axes, and stem cell niches. This presentation will discuss molecular mechanisms controlling these processes in cereals, with a focus on maize and its apomictic relative Tripsacum. First, I will address mechanisms of egg cell activation and parthenogenesis. Particular emphasis will be placed on transcription factors, which are activated after fertilization and can trigger parthenogenetic embryo development when ectopically expressed in the egg cell. The second part will focus on embryo patterning and meristem establishment in maize. The roles of signaling peptides in the endosperm surrounding region (ESR) and early embryo as well transcription factors will be highlighted, that are required for embryo patterning and specification of embryonic meristems. Together, our findings provide a first mechanistic framework linking egg-cell activation, intercompartmental signalling and stem-cell niche establishment during early cereal embryogenesis.
